Baltic West with environmental reports for four Offshore Wind Farm areas
The submission of Environmental Impact Assessment Reports is a key milestone on the road to obtaining the environmental decision for an offshore wind farm. Reports for four areas of the Baltic West project - the second offshore wind farm developed by ORLEN Neptun - have been submitted to a relevant administration authority.
The documentation was completed following comprehensive studies of elements of the marine environmental conditions and monitoring of living organisms, including marine mammals, birds and benthic organisms, carried out in areas where the project is expected to be developed. The surveys, conducted by the Polish company MEWO, used survey vessels and an aircraft that made it possible to take aerial photos.
"The submission of the Environmental Impact Assessment Reports is another important step towards the development of the Baltic West project, a step that allows us to open the next phase of the investment process, including further administrative proceedings and obtaining the environmental decision which are necessary to implement the project and take part in the auction dedicated for the offshore wind energy facilities", says Marcin Sowiński, Baltic West Project Director.
The documentation has been prepared by a team of MEWO experts specializing in all components of the marine environment analyzed. The survey results formed the ground to assess the project’s impact on the environment and to determine the conditions of its implementation and operation. The adopted solutions ensure that the planned investment projects will be carried out with respect for the natural environment and with no significant impact on its condition.
Four areas developed as part of the Baltic West project are expected to reach a total installed capacity of approximately 4 GW, which will provide power for more than 5 million households in Poland. According to the schedule, power from the Baltic West farm will flow for the first time in 2034+.
ORLEN Group is planning to reach 12.8 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2035. By securing 5 sites for offshore wind farms, the ORLEN Group’s generation potential may soon reach a total of more than 6 GW of installed capacity in offshore wind farms.
